Scars and Stains
Blackberry brambles,
thorned arches. Dark clusters
of berries, smaller and seedier
than their domesticated cousins.
But so much better, worth dodging
webs and thorns. Free,
if you count stains
and scratches as rewards.
Yesterday we went blackberry picking in a friends backyard. Forty five minutes in the dimming August light to bring home four pints of berries. But who knows how many never made it to the basket. Some tart, some sweet, some crumbled at our touch.
Fresh Blackberry Daiquirinha: a Daiquiri Caipirinha muddle
ingredients
- 1/2 lime fresh lime cut into wedges
- 1-2 teaspoons sugar (I used coconut palm sugar which arguably could make this a paleo recipe but really it’s up to you. I like the richness that unrefined sugar brings to the drink but superfine sugar will blend better)
- 4-12 blackberries (I used blackberries plucked from a friends backyard, the tiny but flavorful variety, cultivated blackberries are triple the size of the wild ones, so, plan accordingly)
- 2 ounces white rum (I used cuban for an authentic inauthentic daiquiri experience, you could use Cachaça for an authentic inauthentic Caipirinha experience)
directions
- muddle lime, sugar and blackberries in the bottom of a pint glass or mason jar
- add rum and ice and shake, shake, shake until well combined
- strain and serve up or on the rocks ( I split the difference and had half up and then the rest over ice because I was drinking the up cocktail way too fast for a productive afternoon)
