I was looking to recreate a similar tuna salad that I made and posted here several years ago but I live in the country now and harissa is not available at my corner market- or if it is available it is preciously priced. What I do have on hand is a jar of preserved lemon paste (or you can make your own ‘quick’ preserved lemons -if you think ahead at least a week) and a jar of homemade chili crisp so I decided to use those two ingredients in place of the harissa and holy moly I’m hooked. A medium heat, a pleasant spicy crunch, the salty tang of preserved lemon. Serve over salad greens or on a sandwich (with avocado if you can) and say bye bye bland tuna salad, hello lunch.

Course Salad, sandwich

Ingredients

  • 1 can of tuna I used solid white from Costco which is a 7 ounce can, most grocery store cans are 5 ounces
  • 2-4 teaspoons chili crisp I make my own because we go through it like some households go through ketchup- closest variety is probably the trader joes brand
  • ΒΌ cup finely diced onion- any variety I like red onion
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon preserved lemon paste
  • 1/4 cup finely diced celery I used the rib and some of the leafy greens
  • olive oil to taste, to help bind it all together

Instructions

  • If using solid it's a little easier to add the tuna and the chili crisp and lemon paste to a large bowl breaking up the tuna into bite sized pieces.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and thoroughly combine.
  • Serve on a with avocado and more chili crisp on a soft roll or bread for a sandwich or with crackers or over lettuce or eat it straight from the bowl.
