Satsuma mandarin oranges blended whole with rooibos tea for orangetastic, simple, tender muffins flecked with poppy seeds and topped with an optional orange glaze. Let’s be honest. Okay, I’ll be honest. My ingredient lists are largely dictated by what I have lying around. Rooibos tea. Satsuma oranges. Let’s be really honest. I am not […]
Updated January 2023 I believe that breakfast is the best way to eat up yesterday’s cornbread turning the stale and dry to crispy conveyors of flavor and egg. Leftover cornbread seasoned with a bit of chile powder and cumin and pan fried until crispy, farm fresh eggs, roasted green chilies, and (optional) sharp cheddar cheese. […]
Remember that bread pudding with the rum butter sauce that was actually made from the glaze for a pound cake that unless you live here you do not remember? Okay, well then do you remember the fresh cranberry relish? The one I spread on bagels? The one that made a wicked grilled cheese sandwich? I’m […]
Sipping on gin and juice takes on new meaning with this surprisingly delicious and simple winter warmer made with spiced apple cider and Pimms No 1. Leftovers of a different sort, wherein I root through the liquor cabinet looking for something new and discover the Pimms (inherited Pimms actually, bought because of it’s visual similarity […]
Fresh green beans and chanterelle mushrooms baked in parchment with garlic and fresh herbs. Dusted with parmesan, dabbed with butter, and drizzled with a touch of cream and white wine. I love it when a plan comes together. I came up with this idea while fighting my way through the pre-Thanksgiving crowds at the grocery […]
poached apple pie pockets served with spiced apple cider reduction Okay maybe this ingredient isn’t so secret and flakiest isn’t the exact word to describe the difference. Don’t get me wrong this crust is flaky, and easy to work with, and puffs up more than any crust I’ve ever made—but it also seems more refined, more […]
Let’s continue with cranberries. I can’t resist. I love this time of year when bags of fresh cranberries are prominently displayed at my favorite market. I’m not even making Thanksgiving dinner this year but that won’t stop me. This most simple version of fresh cranberry relish is wonderful with cream cheese on a toasted […]
Studded with fresh cranberries this delicious dessert can (and should) be made several hours ahead. Bake while dinner is on the table. Drizzle with a subtly spiced homemade butter rum sauce and there are no leftovers. But we begin as we often do with a remnant, leftovers forgotten on the middle shelf of the fridge. […]
Lying in bed predawn with only the glow of my smart phone to give color to the gloom. Did I suffer from insomnia before the internet? How ever did I fill those hours? What story remains unwritten because I just checked Facebook? What classic remains unread because of Words with Friends? Enough! Out of bed […]
“What’s that?” Her hands are covered in butter but she’s scratching her nose oblivious and the cabinet doors are also buttered and floured- ready to bake. The homey scent of apple and onion floats around her like a homespun halo. She turns towards you and repeats the question, the tip of her nose decidedly not dairy […]
Spicy jalapeño and green chilies mixed with cream cheese and topped with pepper jack, sweet hot peppers, a perfectly baked egg, avocado, and cilantro. inspired by Leite’s Culinaria Breakfast Pizza Recipe You start with a grey morning. Low clouds lick the remaining leaves on the trees making them glisten and drip. A warm bed abandoned, cool […]
A motley crew of hot peppers have been hanging out in my produce drawer for a few weeks now. Top of the to-do list two weekends running. Today I had enough. Today I couldn’t take it anymore. Today I made homemade hot sauce. I’m giving you a recipe but realize that my ingredients were what […]
The tomatoes have finally arrived. After seemingly endless weeks of staring at green tomatoes things have finally started to turn. Straight up, on the rocks, I want to put them in everything. These biscuits are tasty on their own and over the top with gravy. I made a sausage gravy with tomatillos and cilantro […]
I’ve been there, in the freezer aisle of the supermarket, eyeing the frozen cheesecakes but fighting the urge to buy one because I know when I get home I’ll eat the whole thing, still frozen, barely torn from the box. I know because I’ve done it. More than once. I was younger then […]
This began with a late night craving for vanilla pudding and, after a shaggy dog series of steps, evolved into some mighty fine layered popsicles.
Every Wednesday I go to the farmers’ market downtown and buy a half flat of berries- four blue and two raspberry- and strap them to the back of my scooter, which makes me feel like Audrey Hepburn until I catch my reflection in a passing shop window.
When seasons collide what’s left to do but mix it up with a coffee infused raspberry daiquiri. Coffee and a hint of spicy chocolate tempered by the sweet tang of fresh raspberries and rum. This combo could be the start of several different drinks. Blended and topped with whipped cream it’s a dessert in […]
The lilacs are just blooming in Maine. Once, a million summers ago, I drove from San Francisco to Maine and witnessed spring five times, like a film reversing, fast forwarding, looping back, tulips in slow mo, and lilacs three times. Our lilacs are just husks now and the first round of sugar snap peas have […]
I was going to post this recipe weeks ago, even though the pictures were taken with my phone, because it turned out exactly how I imagined it in my head. I’ve never made a pesto with a soft cheese before but it worked. Creamy, substantial and satisfying.
May. Suddenly spring veering toward summer. A garden to plant. Warm sunny days and days where the weather changes every ten minutes. And two weeks where nothing went as planned. Not in the kitchen and not out in the real world. Nothing earth shatteringly good or bad just not as planned.
I know. Longest title ever. Long title short story. Grapefruit on sale. Three open bottles of gin in the cabinet (gifts, every last one of ’em). Three distinctly different bottles of gin in the cabinet. Is it weird (or too Portlandia-ish)that I sniffed all three before opting for the New Deal Gin 33?
I am terrified of the blank page, the white screen, the empty canvas. Just the thought of trying to write a story lately makes me either want to nap or drink. Both options are too sad, even for me, before breakfast. So I turn to a different sort of blank page- oatmeal. I can […]
I love my food processor, we have processed a lot of food together. But the top two are easily pastry crusts and pesto. I’ll pesto almost anything. My pestos never have nuts but that mostly has to do with my nut allergy and that pine nuts are so insanely expensive. I know that there […]
One of my favorite things about cooking is figuring out how to use one ingredient in several dishes. Bake or roast in bulk and then repurpose throughout the week. When I tasted the Roasted Strawberry Balsamic Ciabatta I knew that it would be perfect for french toast. And it is the perfect mix of sweet […]
Strawberries are almost in season here. At the very least they are now arriving from California not Mexico. Baby steps toward spring. Though I guess we are already entering spring’s second stage here. Daffodils have given way to tulips and the lilacs are just starting to bloom. I have a confession. I didn’t follow a […]
Kicking it old school today. I’ve had Pomegranate Molasses on the brain and tongue and an occasional fingerprint on a cabinet door (it’s sticky stuff). All this thinking about pomegranate molasses got me nostalgic for the salad wherein I learned to like beets
This cocktail isn’t pretty. As much as I love Pomegranate Molasses it turns out it does not, as I imagined, impart a ruby hue. But don’t let the murky water scare you, jump in!
I was hungry when I took these pictures. Breakfast had veered dangerously close to lunch. Hangry. Not thinking straight. Beneath that carefully placed egg is a delicate citrus infused patty made with quinoa and rice. It’s really the star of this show but I hid it underneath that egg. There were three more patties. Three […]
Thin like crepes, but with more egg and less flour, these delicate and delicious pancakes are the reason I’ve never cared for the classic breakfast diner gut buster short stack. I like my syrup where I can see it not swallowed by dough. This is the taste of my childhood, the flavor and feeling of […]
Sunny weekend. Fuel needed for yard work. My usual craving for cheese. I could eat cheese with every meal. Quick forage through the refrigerator. Oh look there’s that half of an avocado that I forgot about. Perhaps this was extra delicious because it was the first meal of the season eaten Al Fresco- out under […]
