For anyone with a passing knowledge of Spanish calling a white wine drink “Sangria” is just sort of weird. Sangre=Blood , Sangria literally translates to bloodletting- as in the old medical treatment to balance humors until you pass out (that last bit does make sense in relation to the possible effects of any alcoholic beverage)
But what else am I going to call it? It has white wine, a bit of booze (rum in this case), and a generous helping of citrus fruit. Sangria. You might not be able to get blood from a stone but you can blood-let from fruit.

White Wine Rum and Citrus Punch
a citrus take on white wine sangria made with rum
Equipment
- 1 large lidded jar 32 ounce or larger
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup sugar (absolutely optional)
- 1/4 cup rum (I used Mt Gay)
- 1 small lemon
- 1 small lime
- 1 orange
- 1/4 grapefruit
- 4 cups white wine inexpensice and crisp, like a pinot grigio or albarino
Instructions
- Wash the citrus, slice, and add to jar with sugar and rum, shake to combine
- Top citus rum slurry with white wine and stir or shake
- Refrigerate for at least two hours or up to two days
- Strain and serve, garnish with fruit or top with seltzer if desired
Notes
I had a box of wine so I used cups, sub one 750 ml bottle if that’s what you have. I strain for serving because having pieces of fruit in my glass annoys me. Too boozy? Serve over ice or top with a generous glug of fizzy water or both
