What to do when you are craving comfort but not the usual comforts? Like a much loved sweater in a new bright color, or an upbeat cover of your favorite sad song. Or a delicious hot beverage that is hot buttered but brighter. A batter less sweet, a batter less basic, a batter for […]
Imperial Hard Cider topped with an easy homemade honey hot buttered rum batter will keep you toasty from top to toes! This is a delicious low alcohol winter warmer that adapts effortlessly to being just a bit more boozy (try it with bourbon!) The minute I tasted the 2Towns’ The Bad Apple knew we were […]
Snow on Sand: Hot Coffee Cocktail w/rum, orange liqueur, and amaretto cream Naming drinks is almost as hard as coming up with them. I began with all that follows the colon: Hot Coffee Cocktail w/rum, orange liqueur, and amaretto cream. But the bartender in me rebelled, the story writer- who can’t come up with a […]
Rich, thick, and strong- balanced between booze, sweet and spicy. This little morsel is the perfect stormy day companion. This not, however, the sort of ‘recipe’ you should try if you want to get things done. Deliciously boozy and buttery homemade orange caramel sauce takes hot chocolate to the dizzyingly sumptuous sip and sigh territory, the treat I’m willing to wade through winter for. And while I’m busy pushing the resolutions aside why not add whipped cream (spiked, of course, with even more caramel sauce)? So this is Christmas Eve and […]

It meant staying home from school and watching Perry Mason and the Price is Right on daytime television, Mom’s cool hand on my hot forehead. Comfort. Love. Like Christmas, being sick […]
Meyer lemon and maple melded with just a whisper of rosemary in a hot toddy that makes the cold a little less so.

I know, I know. Homemade marshmallows are so three years ago. But gourmet marshmallows are freaking expensive no matter how pretty they look and homemade marshmallows are like a blank canvas, the possibilities are endless.
Outside frightful. Coffee infused rum, delightful. Add a frothy cloud of warm eggnog and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. On days like this, when the roads are slick and the rooftops are white with snow, I can feel just a teensy bit less guilty for making a cocktail in the middle […]
